President Duterte to grace Labor Day celebration in Cebu


Cebu City, Philippines. Close to 4,000 participants coming from the labor, management, and government sectors are expected to welcome President Rodrigo Roa Durterte tomorrow, May 1, during the 116th Labor Day Celebration at the IC3 Convention Center of Cebu, DOLE-7 Regional Director Alvin M. Villamor confirmed yesterday. 

The President’s visit would highlight the national celebration and according to Villamor, the DOLE Regional Office No. 7 anticipated the bulk of participants coming not only from the workers and unions’ sector but also from those who want to avail the services offered during the day. 

The Trabaho, Negosyo at Kabuhayan (TNK) Job and Business Fair would be opened by Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon M. Lopez. 

The TNK, he added, would also feature the DTI’s Negosyo Center and entrepreneurship and livelihood seminars. One of the components of the TNK is the livelihood and business fair featuring products sold at a discounted price. 

“The local and overseas job fair at the IC3 Convention Center would be offering a total of 10,706 job vacancies to jobseekers. We tallied twenty participating employers for local job fair and thirty-five overseas recruitment agencies,” said the DOLE-7 Head, who advised job fair participants to register as early as 6:00 A.M. tomorrow. 

Also waiting for the workers, especially the OFWs, are the services offered by the One-Stop Service Center for OFWs (OSSCO) involving DOLE-National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO); Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA); Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA); Social Security System (SSS); Philhealth; Professional Regulation Commission (PRC); Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA); Commission on Higher Education (CHED); Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA); MARINA; National Bureau of Investigation (NBI); PAG0IBIG Fund; Bureau of Immigration (BI); Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); Government Service Insurance System (GSIS); and Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). 

Director Villamor encouraged everyone attending tomorrow’s event to take the opportunity and avail the OSSCO services especially if they have questions, queries, clarifications and complaints regarding employer-employee relations. 

One of the main features of the celebration is the medical and dental mission, which is done in close coordination with the Industrial Tripartite Council in Hospitals and other partners such as the Department of Health, Philippine Dental Association, Philippine National Police Station, Philippine Army, and Philippine Nurses Association. 

“We will also be releasing livelihood grants to beneficiaries and we are looking at the local government unit of Samboan, Cebu; the USC-KNN; and the Bacayan Multi-Purpose Cooperative to collectively receive PHP8,865,970.01 from the Department for livelihood assistance,” said the Regional Director. 

The National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO) will award PHP20,000.00 worth of teaching kits each to forty-two (42) OFW-teachers. President Durterte is expected to personally confer the teaching kits to recipients amounting to almost One Million Pesos. 

“We’d like also to inform our clients that for this Labor Day Celebration, our generous partners also donated items and cash for the raffling of major and minor prizes,” said the DOLE-7 Chief. 

The PAG-IBIG Fund will be raffling off 3 units of house and lot – one each for Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao – and One Million Pesos. Five (5) tri-cycle units courtesy of ECC, OSHC, and OWWA are also in store for qualified attendees. Other prizes awaiting the workers would include the following, namely: PHP200,000.00 from the Land Bank of the Philippines; Scholarship Grants from TESDA; Appliances from POEA; Sacks of Rice from the Department of Agriculture; and other freebies from the Phil Health, SSS, GSIS. 

Also part of the May 1 Activities is the oath-taking ceremony of the officers of the newly created Regional Federation Family Welfare Committee for Central Visayas. 

The Celebration, added Director Villamor, will continue on May 2, which is solely dedicated to the workers in the informal sector. Still at the IC3 Convention Center of Cebu, the activity would highlight some learning sessions to be facilitated by the DOLE’s Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC) and the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC). Activities calendared on that day would start at 8:00 A.M. and would likewise include the following, namely: Program of the Informal Sector; Releasing of livelihood grants; Livelihood Fair; and Raffling of Door Prizes. 

“The preparation and efforts we’ve exerted for this Labor Day Celebration are definitely done to honor all types of workers especially the ordinary ones. This Celebration is for them. We want them to know that the Department salutes them for the contributions they’ve made in shaping the kind of labor and employment landscape that we have today. To all workers, Happy Labor Day 2018!” 

Also expected to grace the event are some local chief executives, congressmen, and former DOLE Secretaries, among others.
